NSH Group Awarded Turnkey Contract By Fortescue Metals Group Ltd For Project in Port Hedland, Western Australia

Simmons Machine Tool Corporation, as part of the NSH Group, has been awarded a contract from Fortescue Metals Group Ltd, headquartered in Perth, Australia. Since its first shipment in May 2008, Fortescue has firmly established itself as one of the largest producers and sea-borne traders of iron ore. Simmons is teamed to perform the project with two of its partners in the NSH Group, Hegenscheidt-MFD of Erkelenz, Germany, and Andrew Engineering of Melbourne, Australia.

The team of Simmons, Hegenscheidt, and Andrew Engineering will design, manufacture, and install a state-of-the-art facility for the maintenance of railcar wagons used to transport iron ore from Fortescue’s mines in Australia’s Pilbara region to the port in Port Hedland. Simmons will be responsible for the wheel shop maintenance facility. Andrew Engineering will focus on the ore car maintenance facility. The wheel shop will be one of the most modern in the world containing numerous automated inspection and monitoring systems. Wheels, axles, and wheel sets will be moved from one machine tool to another via integrated robotic systems utilized by the NSH Group on multiple projects worldwide. Simmons will further provide a Production Control System (PCS) that monitors all machines and robotic systems via data and visual systems. Realtime statistical production reporting, visual monitoring, and remote diagnostics are all provided for with the PCS.
