The Simmons Production Control System (PCS) provides a central remote operating station for an automated railway wheel shop to collect production data and monitor the current status of the machines. The real-time monitoring allows the operator to observe how the facility is functioning as a whole, particularly if machine faults or part shortages are limiting production.
The PCS continually monitors the status of each machine via an Ethernet connection. Information about the wheel set or wheel set component currently in the machine, the machine’s operating status, and any errors are immediately displayed to the operator for evaluation. The PCS collects valuable production data for each wheel set component before the work piece is transferred out of a machine. Measurement results, cutting processes and depths, and mounting force data are saved to the PCS; the detailed history of the work piece can be recalled and reviewed later. The PCS screens are customized for each individual wheel shop to incorporate all the relevant equipment as well as provide an intuitive user interface that represents the layout of the shop.
